Erebus was once the high Chaplain of the Word Bearers and venerated the Emperor as a divine being. When the Emperor chastised the Word Bearers for worshipping him Erebus felt humiliated. His drive for spiritual knowledge led him into the arms of the ruinous powers and through their guidance he planned the downfall of the Emperor and all he had wrought.

There had to be a Word Bearer commission for this guy. The sculpt screams the kind of esoterica the Bearers are known for. I went with a green / yellow flame to contrast with the dread blood armour and painted his cloak as if it were cracked old leather.

The Raising of Prospero.

I painted this piece with the Raising of Prospero in mind. Imagine that this Mystic, now called Sorcerer, has seen his life long studies fall to run at the hands of barbarians. Why not release those powers that were described before? Why not unleash the very worst of your craft in one last act of spite?

The cloak is pitted and ripped in pats, and I wanted to have a more battle worn appearance.

The Thanatar is a heavy Siege-automata, designed as a mobile artillery platform rather than a general battle unit. It is armed with a Hellex pattern plasma mortar, a terrifying weapon able to launch dense spheres of blazing plasma on arcing trajectories over defensive barriers and into the heart of enemy fortifications, incinerating anything in their blast radius with a liquid tide of sun-hot fire.

The Thanatar’s frame, built to accommodate the huge weapon and the power systems and fuel reserves required to supply it, is considerably larger than even the hulking Castellax. Its frame is also heavily reinforced, both to withstand the stresses of firing its principal weapon and protect it from incoming attacks. This factor, alongside the use of an atomantic shielding array, make Thanatars notoriously durable. Such is their resilience that Thanatars are beyond the ability of most small arms, no matter how advanced, to harm.

Towering over even the Space Marines of the Legiones Astartes; ‘Iron Circle’ Domitar-Ferrum Class Battle-automata are the unsleeping, unyielding instruments of Perturabo’s will. Designed by the Lord of the Iron Warriors himself, and based on the Domitar class Battle-automata, the Iron Circle were created as his personal bodyguards but soon saw service throughout the Legion.

The Domitar-Ferum is well armed with an Olympia pattern bolt cannon – a rapidly firing, long ranged variant of the mauler bolt cannon; a Graviton maul – a crushing close combat weapon, similar to that of the Mechnicum’s Graviton Hammer but who’s technology has been refined for increased destruction; and a Karceri battle shield – a reactive-armoured shield whose augmented power fields reinforce those of others nearby. Domitar-Ferum Battle-automata can be fielded in maniples of up to six. A single Battle-automata is deadly and well protected, a full maniple is lethal and near unstoppable.

Exousai Issedonnei 12;14

Amongst the choirs of the 9th, the Exousiai were a caste of Assault Marines known to exemplify the high intensity warfare practiced throughout the legion. Squad Arcellus (thus Exousiai Arcellus) has been the main stay veteran assault company of the 133rd expedition fleet, having taken part in the purgation campaign of the Nictatine Doctorate and ruination of the Empire of Ludd.

The Heresy war took a heavy toll on the Exousiai, equipped as they were for xenos and light infantry purgation protocols. They found themselves woefully ill equipped to tackle Legion forces and suffered a high attrition rate throughout the rebellion. Archive photographs shows us varied range of armour marks throughout Exousiai Arcellus with battlefield scouring of the dead being a common practice to replace damaged equipment.
